Explore the wonders of Stone Town

A prime example of a Swahili trading town and an official UNESCO World Heritage Site, Stone Town is awash with history. A mere 2km from the magnificent Hotel Verde Zanzibar, Stone Town is home to several landmarks – from the Sultan’s Palace and the Old Fort to the House of Wonders, the largest building in Stone Town, and more.

One of the highlights is the exceptional architecture, so bring a camera!

The area was once one of the largest slave trading ports in history and Stone Town has several slave monuments to that dark time period. Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes, pack the sunscreen and be prepared to spend some time exploring this unique area.

Spice up your life

Home to an amazing selection of spices and incredible local cuisine, Zanzibar is a dream for any aspiring MasterChef. Don’t visit this idyllic holiday destination without going on one of the spice tours, conducted all year round. The outdoor excursions usually involve visits to spice farms around the islands, where guests can see how these fragrant products are grown and packed. Take a trip with the family and enjoy a day outdoors learning about this integral part of Zanzibari culture.

Spot the monkey

Indigenous to the archipelago, the Zanzibar red colobus monkey is a furry creature that will definitely win over your heart. Conservation efforts have been going on since the 1990s to ensure that this endangered species is able to thrive.

You can see this adorable mammal at Zanzibar’s only national park, the Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park. An hour away from Hotel Verde Zanzibar, the park is the last remaining sanctuaries for the species and offers eco tours around the area. Wear comfy shoes and explore the mangrove swamps, a coastal wetland that is essential to the surrounding ecosystem.
